Born in Florida, USA, the soprano debuted in Europe at the Salzburg Festival and the Vienna State Opera in the role of Arabella in the world premiere of the opera "The Black Mask" by Penderecki.
She also sang this role at the Santa Fe Opera Festival in New Mexico, and in The Theatre du Chatelet In Paris.
After having sung the role of Venus in Tannhäuser at the Dresden Semper Opera, which she has also sung at the Mannheim National Theater, the Kassel State Theater, the Kiel Theater, the Heidelberg Theater, the Magdeburg Theater, and at the Bern Theater, and after singing the role of Salome at the Darmstadt State Theater, the artist sang and portrayed great roles in her voice category at the Kassel State Theater. Among them Donna Elvira, Elsa and Ortrud in Lohengrin, Tosca, Suor Angelica, Marie in Wozzeck, Ariadne, Chrysothemis and Klytämnestra in Elektra, the Field Marshall’s wife in the Rosenkavalier, the Countess in Capriccio, Katerina Ismailowa (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk), Manon Lescaut, Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana, Leonora in La forza del destino, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, and Esther in Harley.
At the opera houses in Essen, Hannover, Braunschweig, Halle, Kassel, and at the Bregenz Festival Culmer-Schellbach guested as Leonora (Il Trovatore) and Abigail (Nabucco), and the role of Amelia in a Masked Ball at the opera houses in Kassel, Braunschweig, Osnabrück and Linz, Austria.
The role of Eboli was portrayed at the theaters in Wiesbaden, Pforzheim, Mannheim and Kassel, and the role of The Lady in Hindemith’s Cardillac at the Berlin Comic Opera.
Culmer-Schellbach portrayed the role of Carmen at the State Theater Kassel, State Theater Saarbrücken, Slovenian National Theater Ljubljana and Theatre Municipal de Luxembourg.
At the opera houses Kassel and Halle,Lona Culmer-Schellbach could be heard in the role of Marina (Boris Godunow), and in the role of Kundry (Parsifal) in Kassel and Kiel.
At the Wiesbaden State Theater, she was a constant guest in the role of Tosca, and at the Bremer Theater, the Ariadne auf Naxos, and sang the role of Madame Butterfly at the Kassel State Theater and the Coburg Theater.
At the Bonn Opera and the Magdeburg Theater, she sang again the title role of Lady Macbeth of Mtzensk and portrayed the role of Santuzza (Cavalleria rusticana) at the Opera Frankfurt, as well as the Aida at the Heidenheim Summer Festival.
Alongside many concerts with orchestras such as the Wichita Symphony, Kansas City Philharmonic, The Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, The Orchestre National de France and appearances in Television in the USA, Lona Culmer-Schellbach is also very successful as a recitalist.
